Why are Remote Jobs on the Rise?

If you could choose, what type of work would you prefer: on-site, remote, or hybrid? With the pandemic-induced restrictions, many companies and employers turned to remote work as a temporary solution. But, even after the restrictions were lifted, working remotely became the norm for many people. A considerable percentage of people don’t want to go to the office every day, and others would never go back if given the option.

Today, up to 40% of tech professionals work remotely, and data shows that remote employment is continuously increasing.

Why is remote work on the rise?

The big competition for candidates made many businesses and companies start offering hybrid roles. Even though hybrid job opportunities are great in theory, some companies have rigid policies, expectations, and employment formulas.

Those policies discourage potential employees, and with the talent pool shrinking, companies had to offer more competitive work flexibility. For a lot of employees, it’s better to stay with an employer that offers good working benefits and relations than it is to shift to new workplaces constantly. Companies started to provide remote roles to attract competent individuals while fighting this retention tendency.

But, employee satisfaction is not the sole reason behind remote job offers. Future-oriented employers understand that remote hiring will significantly increase team diversity and talent pool.

Flexible role positions are an excellent opportunity for many parents, especially working mothers, who usually are primary family caregivers.

Environment-friendly

Remote jobs are also more environment-friendly. There is a carbon footprint reduction with lowered needs for office maintenance. The “green planet recovery” is more and more necessary, so both companies and employees become environmentally conscious and feel pride in contributing to the cause.

Furthermore, remote work also increases remittance and decreases commute times. This, in turn, increases employee satisfaction and retention. Through remote work, employment competition for talent has become more widespread around the world. A Cambridge-based company is not only competing for talent in London County but competes for globally recognized individuals.

Today, a professional based in Sweden can easily get employed in Malta for a globally competitive salary. Aspiring companies adopt this growth-oriented mindset to attract the best talent for each of their sectors.

Improved Work-Private life balance

A typical workplace might make balancing work and family obligations challenging, which can disrupt daily living. People choose remote work because it offers flexible working hours and allows them to avoid the daily commute from their homes to their offices and back. Rather than wasting time commuting, remote employees can spend more time with their families, something that is necessary for a balanced life and improved job satisfaction.

Commitment based results

Working remotely ensures that your work reflects your dedication and commitment. Working from home may undoubtedly generate some distractions, but you may also approach it as a challenge to organize your personal and family life and achieve your goals while working remotely.

Even though there might be some organizing challenges, remote workers, if organized, can show increased professional commitment and still improve their work-life balance.

Travel and work flexibility

The age of technology allowed people to work from everywhere, even while traveling. This benefit is only accessible to remote workers. As long as the employees are connected to their office and have all their work essentials, they can travel and enjoy their life while still delivering results. Naturally, this further increases work satisfaction and minimizes risks of burnout.

Neglecting hybrid remote positions

Even though hybrid remote positions started as an upgrade to the classical in-person job positions, some companies have started to abandon this regime with time. Some companies require their employees to make a minimum number of office appearances, even if they, most of the time work remotely. The argument behind this requirement is the “company culture” and quality control.

But, this requirement subverts the point of flexible remote work – the ability for employees to optimize their work-life balance and still maintain in-office productivity. For hybrid work systems to function, employees should be given a chance to plan their office visits and adapt them based on their ability and not the company’s’ schedule.

The future of Remote work

Competitively priced remote employment will certainly begin to predominate the market if companies continue to impose strict standards for attentiveness and flexibility. Shifts are already being felt nationally in the UK, where the number of remote jobs is expected to increase further in 2022 and the following years. According to a survey conducted by Business Leader, up to 78% of UK workers would change occupations to work entirely remote.

This certainly doesn’t indicate that offices and in-person work positions will die off. Fully remote roles sometimes suggest that there is no office at all, which is terrible for many professionals. Many employees want and require coming into an office for numerous reasons. Things like social interaction, team building, a quiet work environment, or resource availability are still significant positive aspects of going to an office.

So, in-person work must remain an option for the system to work effectively. Another Business Leader survey showed that up to 57% of employees want a hybrid work model where they can split their working hours between in-office and home.

Choosing your working model is liberating for most employees and gives them more control over how they work. The best future-oriented companies understand this and offer numerous flexible work options with globally competitive salaries and opportunities. In today’s professional world, flexible work opportunities are as important as matching pension, health days, or paid holiday leave.
